in search box & searches for all forms (eg, "God's love" finds
phrases with God, God's, godly.... love, loving, loves).

Search Limits: You can also use AND or NOT (Note:
these limiting words MUST be in all caps). Eg, "remember
me" retrieves about 60 hits. "remember me" AND Nehemiah
retrieves 6 hits but they are related to Nehemiah (See Neh 5:19,
13:14, 22, 31)

Proximity search. Eg, "Old Testament spirit"~10 = finds those
3 words within 10 words of each other. If that finds nothing,
change to ~20 or ~30. That should help you look for some topic
like "Ministry of the Holy Spirit in the OT"

Charles H Spurgeon writes that Horae
Homileticae are "Not Commentaries, but we could not exclude them. They
have been called “a valley of dry bones”: be a prophet and they will live."

says that Horae Homileticae "is the best place to go for researching
Simeon's theology. You can find his views on almost every key text in the
Bible. He did not want to be labeled a Calvinist or an Arminian. He
wanted to be Biblical through and through and give every text its due
proportion, whether it sounded Arminian as it stands or Calvinistic. But
he was known as an evangelical Calvinist, and rightly so. As I have read
portions of his sermons on texts concerning election and effectual calling
and perseverance he is uninhibited in his affirmation of what we would call
the doctrines of grace....What Simeon experienced in the word was
remarkable. And it is so utterly different from the counsel that we receive
today that it is worth looking at." (Brothers,

Cowles writes with perspicuity, precision, and conciseness — three
invaluable excellences of style for a Commentary. All his writings breathe
a reverent spirit toward the Divine Word. Clergymen and laymen may derive
profit from this, and from his preceding expositions of the sacred books.
— There is unquestionably a difference between an allegorical and a
typical poem or tale. Still, when Dr. Cowles uses the term "allegorical,"
he often has the same meaning which Zockler has when he uses the word
"typical." The design of many commentators who defend the allegorical
interpretation is substantially the same with the design of others who
defend the typical. We regard the latter term, however, and the shading of
the theory involved in it, as more felicitous than the former term
(allegorical), with the shading of the theory connected with it. The
typical theory is more definite, and less liable to be run into
extravagances. Dr. Cowles, however, is remarkably free from extravagance,
uncommonly sober and reasonable in his interpretations.

How do works relate to regeneration
by grace through faith?
"Works are to salvation, what thunder is to lightning, an inevitable
result. Just as thunder does not generate lightning, our good deeds will
not generate salvation. But on the other hand, just as you can't have
lightning without the following thunderclap, you can't experience the
transformation of salvation without a change in your attitudes and
behaviors. And those changes are a gradual process called sanctification,
that can be likened to an endurance race. The apostle Paul often compared
the Christian life to a long race, as did the author of the book of

in part because the latter includes comments of more technical
nature), the substance of the commentary is otherwise similar to that

James Rosscup writes that "This was the great work in the life of
the versatile Dean of Canterbury. An outcome of this production was
the New Testament for English Readers (4 vols.). Alford was a
Calvinist, conservative and premillennial, though not dispensational.
He takes a literal interpretation of the thousand years in Rev. 20 and
has a famous quote there, is strong on sovereign election as in Ro
8:29, 30 and 1Pe 1:2, but, unfortunately, holds to baptismal
regeneration in such texts as Titus 3:5 and John 3:5. He shows a great
knowledge of the Greek text and faces problems of both a doctrinal and
textual nature."
