Save - Sozo (Greek Word Study)

Saved (4982) (sozo) has the basic meaning of rescuing one from great peril. Additional nuances include to protect, keep alive, preserve life, deliver, heal, be made whole. The context must be considered to determine whether preservation of physical life or spiritual life is in view.

Sozo is sometimes used of physical deliverance from danger of perishing (see Mt 8:25; Mt 14:30; Lk 23:35; Acts 27:20, 27:31), physical healing from sickness (Mt 9:21, 22; Mk 5:23, Acts 4:9), and deliverance from demonic possession (Lk 8:36).

More often sozo refers to salvation in a spiritual sense as illustrated in the following passages: Matthew recorded the angel's conversation with Joseph declaring "She (Mary) will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save (sozo) His people from their sins." (Mt 1:21)

Sozo the verb and soteria (see word study) the noun are surely two of the most important words in all of God's Word. For an interesting analysis of soteria by William Barkley click here.

Sozo is used 54x in the Gospels with 3 different meanings depending on context

1). 14x - deliverance from disease or demon possession
    Mt 9:21, 22; Mk 3:4; 5:23, 28, 34; 6:56; 10:52,  Lu 6:9; 8:36, 48, 50; 17:19; 18:42; Jn 11:12

2). 20x - rescue of physical life fr some impending peril or death
    Mt 8:25; 14:30; 16:25; 27:40, 42, 49; Mk 8:35; 15:30, 31;      Lu 9:24, 56; 23:35, 37, 39; Jn12:27

3). 20x - spiritual salvation
    Mt 1:21; 10:22; 19:25; 24:13, 22; Mk 8:35; 10:26; 13:13, 20; 16:16; Lu 7:50; 8:12; 9:24;13:23; 18:26; 19:10 Jn 3:17; 5:34; 10:9; 12:47

Gerald Cowen has an excellent summary of sozo in the secular Greek papyri

(1) It means to recover from sickness. A document from 132 B.C. says, "Your life has been saved in sickness by the great god Socnopaeus."

(2) It is used of rescue from danger. Another papyrus says, "Thanks to Serapis, when I was in danger at sea, he saved me."

(3) It may refer to the saving of a person's life. It is said that "in the first place Caesar saved Cleopatra's life when he conquered the kingdom."

(4) The use of preserving something from going out of existence is illustrated by a reference to "certain books saved at the temple."

(5) Sozo can also have the meaning "reserving" or "keeping something back" for a special purpose as in the case of "sacred revenues" that are "to be preserved for the gods as in former times."

(6) Finally, this term can refer to the state of being that results from "being saved" (safe and sound). A reference has been found that refers to "sixty pigeons safe and sound," and another, "I will hand over the freight safe and unharmed." (See full discussion of sozo and soteria below)

NIDNTT on classic use of sozo -

1. In the first instance both the vb. and the noun denote rescue and deliverance in the sense of averting some danger threatening life. This can happen in war or at sea. But that which one is delivered from may also be an illness. Where no immediate danger is mentioned, they can mean to keep or preserve. The verb  and the noun  can even mean safe return home.

2. In religious contexts the gods save men from the various perils of life. They are regarded as saviours (→ σωτηρία) and protectors, able to turn away the fate that threatens men.

3. For the gnostics (See Gnosticism and NT) it is knowledge given by divine → revelation which frees the soul from the power of death

4. In the mystery religions deliverance comes through the initiate’s sharing in the experience of the dying and rising god through the actions of the mystery cult. (Ed: Notice Satan's counterfeit to the believer's co-crucifixion and co-resurrection with Christ! Ro 6:4-6-note)....

5. In the philosophical and religious spheres, sōzō and sōtēria are used to denote the divine preservation of all things....

6. In the gnosticism attested by the post-Christian Hermetic literature, it is knowledge (gnōsis) which saves. It is imparted to the gnostic by revelation or by a mediator. Its content is the salvation of man from the power of death. The → soul is saved. (NIDNTT)

TDNT on sozo as used in the Greek World -

1. Saving. These terms first refer to salvation (human or divine) from serious peril. Curing from illness is another sense. Horses may save in battle, or night may save an army from destruction, good counsel may save ships, etc. Cities, castles, ships, etc. may be saved as well as people. At times protection may be the meaning, and sōtḗria can have the sense of a “safe return.”
2. Keeping. The meaning at times may be that of keeping alive, e.g., pardoning, protecting, keeping from want, keeping a fire going. Other uses are for keeping wine, goods, and even beards, as well as preserving memory.
3. Benefiting. The idea of rescuing from peril disappears when the idea is that of keeping in good health, or benefiting, or when the noun means “well-being,” i.e., of a city, country, family, etc.
4. Preserving the Inner Being. A special nuance is when the terms refer to preserving the inner being or nature. In philosophy inner health may be the point or the preservation of one’s humanity.
5. Religious Usage. All the nuances occur in religious usage. Thus the gods rescue from the perils of life. Philosophy discusses the preservation of all things from perishing. A demand arises for the preservation of life beyond death. In the Gnostic sphere gnósis supposedly saves from death as it is imparted by revelation. In the mysteries initiates share in the salvation of a mythical divine being from death and thereby attain to a blissful life in the hereafter. A special Syrian belief mentioned in Origen Against Celsus 7.9 is that there is salvation from eternal punishment by worship of a divine envoy and faith in him.      [W. FOERSTER, VII, 965–69] (TDNT)

Jesus warned His disciples "And you will be hated by all on account of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved (sozo)." (Mt 10:22, cf Mt 24:13) Note it is not one's endurance (self effort or works) that save them but that one is able to endure because of the fact that they are saved. Again Jesus was teaching His disciples about salvation and declared

"it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." And when the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" (Mt 19:24, 25)

Here He equated entrance into the kingdom of God with being saved. In explaining to His disciples and the multitudes what it meant to come after Him, denying self, taking up one's cross and following Him, Jesus declared that

"whoever wishes to save (referring to one's physical life) his life shall lose it (eternally); but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's shall save (spiritually) it (eternally)." (Mk 8:34)

Jesus speaking to a

"woman in the city who was a sinner" (Lk 7:37) "said to her ""Your sins have been forgiven" (Lk 7:48) and then

"Your faith has saved (sozo) you; go in peace." (Lk 7:50).

In these passages Jesus equates sozo with forgiveness of sins, confession of faith and experiencing peace! In a parable explaining the role of the Word of God and the character of the "soil" in salvation, Jesus taught that

"those (people) beside the road are those who have heard (the seed, the Word, the Gospel); then the devil comes (Mark's gospel adds "immediately", "at once") and takes away (present tense - continually) the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved." (Lk 8:12)

Observe that one cannot be saved unless he believes the word and that merely hearing (and even assenting to the veracity) of the word does not result in salvation.

NET Bible notes add that

"The word of Jesus has the potential to save if it germinates in a person’s heart, something the devil is very much against."

Jesus addressing the repentant Zaccheus declaring for all to hear

"Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham (who by faith was reckoned righteousness - Ge 15:6). For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost (this word speaks of eternal ruin, destitution and spiritual death)." (Lk 19:9,10)

Jesus taught that

"God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him." (Jn 3:17) One is saved (only) by entering "through Christ" as He amplified later explaining "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture."

Peter explained to his Jewish audience how one could avoid the terrifying and dreadful Day of the LORD's wrath, quoting Joel 2:32 and declaring

that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. (Acts 2:21)

Peter later made it very clear that

there is salvation in no (absolute negative - no exception clauses) one else; for there is no other name (Jesus) under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

The Philippian jailer summed up spiritual salvation asking Paul and Silas

Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household. (Acts 16:31).

EXAMPLES OF USES OF
SOZO IN THE SEPTUAGINT

Sozo - Used about 274 times in the non-apocryphal Septuagint (Lxx) -  Click for all of the Old Testament verses that use sozo.

Sozo is used 3 times in the first verse in which the angel told Lot to flee Sodom and Gomorrah..

Genesis 19:17 As soon as they had been brought outside, he was told: "Flee (or escape - Heb = malat = slip away, be saved; Lxx = Sozo used twice! = "sozon soze" latter is in the aorist imperative - Do this now! Don't delay! is the idea) for your life! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the Plain. Get off (Lxx = Sozo) to the hills at once, or you will be swept away."

Comment: Note that God provided the way of escape (cp this principle in 1 Cor 10:13-note), the way to be saved from destruction and issued the clear command to be saved. Lot lingered but eventually choose God's way of escape (cp 2Pe 2:7-9-note where rescue is rhuomai), a choice his wife tragically rejected (See Ge 19:26 and Jesus' warning Lk 17:32)

Here is the Septuagint-NETS English - And it came about when they had brought them outside, that then they said, “In saving, save your own soul; do not look around backwards or stop in the whole region round about; get safely to the mountain, that you not be included.”

Genesis 32:30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life (soul) has been preserved (Hebrew = natsal = rescue; Lxx = sozo)."

Judges 2:16 Then (When? Read context Jdg 2:11-15) the LORD raised up judges who delivered (Hebrew = yasha'; Lxx = sozo) them from the hands of those who plundered them.

1 Samuel 17:47 (David speaking) and that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver (Hebrew = yasha'; Lxx = sozo) by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD'S and He will give you into our hands.

2 Samuel 22:3 (David speaking) My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My Shield and the Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold and my Refuge; My Savior (Lxx = soteria), You save (Hebrew = yasha'; Lxx = sozo) me from violence.

Here is a wonderful use of sozo in the Septuagint (Lxx) in the form of a brief but powerful prayer by David…

Psalm 12:1 Help Lord, for the godly man ceases to be, for the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.

Comment: The Hebrew word for "help" here is yasha' which means to deliver, to save, to help, to preserve, to endow with salvation, to gain the victory or be victorious, to be liberated. The Lxx translates it with the Greek verb sozo, which means to rescue one from peril, danger or suffering, to protect from loss or destruction, to heal, to make whole, to keep alive, to preserve life (physical but especially spiritual - compare Ps 6:4, Ps 86:2).

C H Spurgeon has some wonderful insights on David's two word prayer "HELP LORD" in Psalm 12:1 writing that

The prayer itself is remarkable, for it is short, but seasonable, sententious (pithy), and suggestive. David mourned the fewness of faithful men, and therefore lifted up his heart in supplication—when the creature failed, he flew to the Creator. He evidently felt his own weakness, or he would not have cried for help; but at the same time he intended honestly to exert himself for the cause of truth, for the word “help” is inapplicable where we ourselves do nothing. There is much of directness, clearness of perception, and distinctness of utterance in this petition of two words; much more, indeed, than in the long rambling outpourings of certain professors. The Psalmist runs straight-forward to his God, with a well-considered prayer; he knows what he is seeking, and where to seek it. Lord, teach us to pray in the same blessed manner.

The occasions for the use
of this prayer are frequent.

In providential afflictions how suitable it is for tried believers who find all helpers failing them.

  • Students, in doctrinal difficulties, may often obtain aid by lifting up this cry of “Help, Lord,” to the Holy Spirit, the great Teacher.
  • Spiritual warriors in inward conflicts may send to the throne for reinforcements, and this will be a model for their request.
  • Workers in heavenly labour may thus obtain grace in time of need.
  • Seeking sinners, in doubts and alarms, may offer up the same weighty supplication.

In fact, in all these cases, times, and places, this will serve the turn of needy souls. “Help, LORD,” will suit us living and dying, suffering or laboring, rejoicing or sorrowing. In Him our help is found, let us not be slack to cry to Him.

The answer to the prayer is certain, if it be sincerely offered through Jesus. The Lord’s character assures us that he will not leave his people; his relationship as Father and Husband guarantee us his aid; his gift of Jesus is a pledge of every good thing; and his sure promise stands, “Fear not, I will help thee.” (Spurgeon, C. H. Morning and evening : Daily readings: June 17 AM).

Beloved are we not in need of His Help, His salvation every day?! Our mortal enemies the world, the flesh and the devil daily (yea, even moment by moment) seek to being us down, to cause us to stumble, to "wound" our soul. It follows that David's prayer "Help Jehovah" should continually be in our heart and on our lips! Stop and utter this brief but powerful prayer even now. Take a moment to give thanks and praise to our Lord Jesus for His great rescue of each of us from eternal death by offering His life as a substitute for our life… listen to modern worship song based on Fanny Crosby's hymn by the same name…

Rescue The Perishing
Billy Foote and Cindy Foote

In his book Illustrations of Bible Truth, H. A. Ironside included the story of a new convert who gave his testimony during a church service. With a smile on his face and joy in his heart, the man related how he had been delivered from a life of sin. He gave the Lord all the glory, saying nothing about any of his own merits or what he had done to deserve the blessings of redemption. The person in charge, who was very legalistic, didn’t fully appreciate the reality of salvation by grace through faith alone, apart from human works. So he responded to the young man’s comments by saying, “you seem to indicate that God did everything when He saved you. Didn’t you do your part before God did His?”

The new Christian jumped to his feet and said, “Oh yes, I did. For more than 30 years I ran away from God as fast as my sins could carry me. That was my part. But God took out after me and ran me down. That was His part.”

Commenting on this testimony, Ironside wrote, “It was well put and tells a story that every redeemed sinner understands.”

Illustration of God’s sacrificial love - The story is told of John Griffith, a Missouri man who was the controller of a great railroad drawbridge across the Mississippi during the Great Depression. One fine summer day in 1937, John decided to take his 8 year old son, Greg, to work with him. At noon, John raised the bridge to allow transit to any ships that might pass by and sat on the observation deck with Greg to eat their lunch. The minutes passed lazily as the noon day beat down on them. Suddenly, John was jolted by the sound of shrieking train whistle in the distance. He quickly looked at his watch. It was 1:07 and the Memphis Express, with 400 passengers was roaring toward the raised bridge! He leaped up from the observation deck and ran back to the control tower. Before throwing the master lever, he looked down to see if any ships were passing below. The sight he saw caused his pounding heart to leap into his throat. Greg had slipped from the observation deck and had fallen into the massive gears that operate the bridge. His left leg was caught in the cogs of the two main gears! Desperately, John’s mind raced to devise a rescue plan. The seconds were quickly ticking away and he knew there wasn’t enough time for him to rescue his son before the train reached the bridge. Again, with alarming closeness, the train’s shrill whistle cut through the summer air. He could hear the wheels as they clicked along on the tracks. That was his son trapped below! Yet there were 400 passengers on the train. John knew what he had to do, so he buried his head in his left arm and pushed the lever forward to lower the bridge. Just seconds after the massive bridge settled into place, the Memphis Express, with its 400 passengers barreled across the river. When John lifted his tear-streaked face, he looked into the passing windows of the train. There were businessmen casually reading their newspapers; finely dressed ladies in the dining car sipping coffee; and children eating bowls of ice cream. No one looked at the control tower. No one saw the great gear box. With wrenching agony, John Griffith cried out at the retreating steel monster, “I sacrificed my son for you people! Don’t you care?” The train let out one parting whistle and then sounds that were left were the sobs of the broken man and the clicking wheels fading in the distance recalling the words from Lamentations 1:12: “Is it nothing to you, all who pass by?” God allowed His Son to be a sacrifice and die in our place. We should have been the ones who faced hell as a result of our sins. But God had Jesus die in our place and pay the price to save us from hell. He didn’t do it because we were nice people and deserved to be saved from hell. He did it because we were hopeless without Jesus. He did it because He loved us.

The story is told about a woman in California who was picked up for speeding. She was ticketed and taken before the judge. The judge read off the citation and said, "Guilty or not guilty?" She said, "Guilty," and the judge banged his gavel and fined her $100. But then he did something strange. Standing up, he removed his robe, walked down around to the front, stood beside the woman, and took out his billfold. He removed $100 and paid the fine. The judge was her father. He was a just judge, and yet he loved his daughter and paid her penalty. Sound familiar?

SOZO
STUDY BY GERALD COWEN

One of the most common expressions in the New Testament to describe the state of the believer in Jesus Christ is the word saved. In fact, the verb form alone (sozo) occurs over ninety times in the New Testament and the noun form forty-six times (soterio). Just what does it mean to be saved?

Let us begin by looking at the background of this word. In classical Greek sozo means to escape destruction (to keep a whole skin), to be healed (recover from sickness), keep safe or preserve (such as a city), to be preserved or extant (such as a book), to bring one home safe from a journey, and carry off safe (rescue from something such as death).

In secular Greek papyri from the New Testament period sozo had a variety of uses, just as does the English word save.

(4) The use of preserving some-thing from going out of existence is illustrated by a reference to "certain books saved at the temple."

(5) Sozo can also have the meaning "reserving" or "keeping some-thing back" for a special purpose as in the case of "sacred revenues" that are "to be preserved for the gods as in former times."

(6) Finally, this term can refer to the state of being that results from "being saved" (safe and sound). A reference has been found that refers to "sixty pigeons safe and sound," and another, "I will hand over the freight safe and unharmed."

The use of soteria (salvation) in the Old Testament has been summarized in the following manner.'

(1) In the Greek Old Testament, soteria means "general safety and security." Proverbs 11:14 says that in the multitude of counselors there is safety (soteria).

(2) It speaks of "deliverance from trouble in general." The man who waits on God will rejoice in his deliverance (Isa. 25:9; Ps. 20:6; Jer. 25:35).

(3) Often, soteria refers to "deliverance from an enemy." It describes God's deliverance of Israel from her enemies (see Judg. 15:18; 1 Sam. 11:9,13; 2 Kings 13:5).

(4) In particular, "salvation" describes Israel's deliverance at the Red Sea. Moses said, "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord" (Ex. 14:13).

(5) The full extent of salvation is spoken of as future. The glory of God will be completely revealed only in the age to come (Isa. 45:17; 52:10; Jer. 3:23).

(6) The source of salvation is God. He is described as the God of salvation (Ps. 18:46; 38:22; 51:14).

(7) Finally, salvation is a prominent theme in the songs of thanksgiving found in the Old Testament. Hannah thanked God for His salvation when she learned she was to have a son (1 Sam. 2:1; see also Ex. 15:2; 2 Sam. 22:3,36,47,51).

With all the varied uses of sozo and soteria in the Old Testament and secular literature, these terms have a rich background for use in the New Testament. Some of the old uses are repeated in the New Testament, such as deliverance from the sea (Acts 27:34), deliverance from prison (Phil. 1:19), and safety (Heb. 11:7). However, the vast majority of uses of "salvation" and "save" in the New Testament are in connection with that spiritual deliverance granted by God through faith in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. First of all, the New Testament is clear that salvation is one of the main items in the purpose of God. Jesus said, "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost" (Luke 19:10). Again, He said, "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved" (John 3:17). Paul added that Jesus came into the world "to save sinners" (1 Tim. 1:15). The purpose of Jesus' coming to earth is to make the salvation of humankind possible.

In the second place, Jesus is the essential part of God's plan of salvation. It is through Him alone that a person may be saved. Acts 4:12 states, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." This is reminiscent of Jesus' own teaching in John 10:1-9. He said that anyone who tries to enter the sheepfold by any other way than the door is a "thief and a robber"; then He said, "I am the door." Jesus is so much at the center of salvation that sometimes He is equated with it. For example, Luke records Jesus' visit to the house of Zacchaeus (19:1-10). At the end of the visit Jesus said, "This day is salvation come to this house." (See also John 4:22.)

Another thing that ought to be noticed about salvation is that human agency is necessary in bringing it about. Obviously, God could effect it without human effort, but it is also obvious that He has chosen not to do it that way.

Paul, speaking of his ministry to Israel, said, "I magnify mine office: If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them" (Rom. 11:13-14, author's italics).

He told the Corinthians that believing husbands and wives should not leave their marriage partners because by staying they might be able to "save" them (1 Cor. 7:16). He became "all things to all men" that he might "save some" (1 Cor. 9:22; see also 10:33). The Jews, on the other hand, hindered him from speaking to the Gentiles "that they might be saved" (1 Thess. 2:16).

Paul warned Timothy to be careful about his doctrine because in doing so he would save himself and "them that hear" (1 Tim. 4:16). James said that the man who converts a sinner from the error of his way "shall save a soul from death, and hide a multitude of sins" (5:20).

Finally, Jude encouraged the soul-winner to use whatever approach is necessary to persuade the sinner to be saved when he said, "And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire" (Jude 1:22-23). These references are sufficient to show that God uses people to bring about His goal of saving others.

If people are instrumental in bringing salvation to other people, it follows that this gift of salvation may be refused by those to whom it is offered. The author of Hebrews emphasized this point when he said, "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Heb 2:3).

Again he said, "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him" (Heb 5:9).

Now let us discuss these factors mentioned in the New Testament that bring about salvation. First, there is the preaching of the cross. The message of Christ's death on the cross is essential. "Unto us which are saved, it is the power of God," Paul said (1 Cor. 1:18). He went on to explain this further, "It pleased God by the foolishness of the thing preached to save them that believe" (1 Cor 1:21).

Next, there is the essential element of the grace of God. The familiar text of Ephesians 2:8 underlines this truth: "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." Add to that the word of Peter at the Jerusalem conference on the salvation of the Gentiles (Acts 15:11), "But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they," and one must realize that salvation comes only as a gift from God. Any work on the part of a person seeking salvation is of no consequence in bringing about his or her salvation.

A third factor that leads to salvation is repentance (a change of mind). Paul wrote, "For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world works death" (2 Cor. 7:10). A person must change his or her mind about God and about sin. Closely connected with repentance is faith. Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace are you saved through faith." Paul said the gospel is "the power of God unto salvation to every-one who believes" (Rom. 1:16). To Timothy he wrote concerning the "holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (2 Tim. 3:15). In addition, Peter spoke of the connection faith has with salvation: "Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls" (1 Pet. 1:9).

A fifth factor mentioned in the New Testament regarding salvation is endurance. Jesus said to the disciples, "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake, but he that endures to the end shall be saved" (Matt. 10:22; see also Matt 24:13). The man who believes truly in Jesus Christ will not be defeated "by his own doubts nor by the arguments and seductions of others. His trust is some-thing to which he must cling as to a life belt in an overwhelming sea"' And he will.

One of the reasons for the believer's endurance is an-other factor that brings about salvation, the intercession of Christ. The author of Hebrews said, "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them" (Heb. 7:25). John 17 is an example of this intercessory prayer that undergirds the believer.

Now that some of the facts about salvation and factors involved in salvation have been surveyed, another question needs to be asked. From what is a person saved? In the spiritual sense, there are three categories of deliverance from sin. First, there are those that relate to salvation from the penalty of sin. Jesus came to save sinners from being "lost" (Matt. 18:11). James added that to convert a sinner is to "save a soul from death" (Jas. 5:20). Not only is the believer saved from being lost and from death, but also the believer is saved from the wrath of God. Paul said, "Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him" (Rom. 5:9).

Next, there is salvation from the power and oppression of sin in this world. Luke recorded the words of Peter to the Jews .at Pentecost; he exhorted them to "save your-selves from this untoward [perverse] generation" (Acts 2:40). Paul testified, even though he was facing death, of God's faithfulness, "And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve [sozo] me unto his heavenly kingdom" (2 Tim. 4:18). This idea is also found in many other passages, such as Romans 6:14, although the word salvation is not used there.

Finally, in the future the believer shall be saved from the presence of sin and its contamination. In Matthew 19:23-25, entering the kingdom of heaven is equated with being saved; Jesus told the disciples that a "rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven." In fact, it is easier for a "camel to go through the eye of a needle." Their reply was, "Who then can be saved?" The final installment of our salvation involves entering the place where there is nothing that "works abomination or a lie" (Rev. 21:27).

So then, salvation can be spoken of as past, present, and future. It is past for the person who has already received Christ. That person has been saved. Paul used this terminology in Titus 3:5, where he said, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us." Again, in 2 Timothy 1:9, speaking of God, he said, "Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling." In the Greek text also, Romans 8:24 reads, "For we are saved by hope." Salvation is described as a continuous action in present time in 1 Corinthians 1:18. Paul said that to the "ones who are being saved" (author's interpretation) the preaching of the cross is the "power of God." The believer is in the process of being saved. (See 1 Cor. 15:2 also.) This process will be completed at the end of the age, when Christ comes to claim His bride, the church. Even those without proper works will still "be saved; yet so as by fire" (1 Cor. 3:15). The church is to discipline those who are living in sin "that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus" (1 Cor. 5:5). Peter said that we have a salvation that is "ready to be revealed in the last time" (1 Pet. 1:5). And finally, it is in the end times that a voice from heaven will say, "Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down" (Rev. 12:10).
