NEW FEATURES
AS OF AUGUST, 2026

TWO NEW FEATURES TO MAKE BIBLE STUDY EASIER

1) VERSE COMMENTARY FINDER

Looking for commentary on a specific verse? Just type a Scripture reference, such as Ro 8:28, press ENTER and the commentary on that verse opens immediately. All 7,592 New Testament verses have commentary, along with about two-thirds of the Old Testament.

Give the VERSE COMMENTARY FINDER a try!

2) SCRIPTURE REFERENCES ARE NOW CLICKABLE

In the past, when you saw a “+” or “-note” after a Scripture reference, you could click that symbol to open the commentary on the verse.

Now it's much easier. Just click the Scripture reference itself (any reference with a hyperlink)

For example, on Acts 1:1 you will find the list of cross-references shown below. Click on any of those Scripture references and you will be taken directly to the Precept Austin commentary on that passage. You can even click Acts 1:1 itself to see how it works.

  • The first account I composed Luke 1:24
  • Theophilus Luke 1:3
  • about all that Jesus began to do and teach Acts 2:22; Mt 4:23,24; 11:5; Luke 7:21-23; 24:19; John 10:32-38; 18:19-21; 1 Peter 2:21-23

TRY IT! As you study, simply click a Scripture reference and follow it to the commentary. It makes following cross-references and comparing Scripture with Scripture faster and easier than ever.

NOTE: Approximately one-third of the Old Testament commentaries are still being completed, so some Old Testament references may not yet have a commentary available. Lord willing, those will be added.

Remember that we have been "bought with a price" to be "ambassadors for Christ" and our "salvation is nearer to us than when we believed" so let us "cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God" "so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming (parousia)." Hallelujah! HosannaMaranathaAmen! (1 Cor 6:20, 2 Cor 5:20, Ro 13:11, 2 Cor 7:1, 1Jn 2:28)

HOW TO USE PRECEPTAUSTIN
MOST EFFICIENTLY

I realize that with well over 20,000 pages of material (with some individual HTML pages having the equivalent of 50 type-written pages or more of material) this site is voluminous and can be difficult to use and navigate. The site has evolved over about 20 years and is revised and added to almost daily (See Recently Updated Pages).

BELOW IS THE "VERSE COMMENTARY FINDER" - To view the commentary on a specific verse, select the verse and press Enter. You will be taken directly to the commentary for that verse. Please note that while commentary is available for every New Testament passage, not every Old Testament passage currently has commentary. The Old Testament commentary is an ongoing project and is being added progressively. See the Verse Commentary Finder page for simple, step-by-step instructions on how to add it to your iPhone as an app.

RECOMMENDED WORK-AROUND WHEN A LINK SAYS “PAGE NOT FOUND” (404 ERROR)

Many older links, especially those from early versions of the site, may return a “Page Not Found” (404) message. The following simple workaround often recovers the missing page:

  1. Go to: https://web.archive.org/
  2. Copy and paste the URL that produced the dead link.
    Example: Sermon on Isaiah 34
    URL: https://bstudy.richcathers.com/23%20Isa/1999/23Isa34a.htm
Paste this URL into the search box on archive.org.
  3. Press Enter on your keyboard.
  4. A Timeline will appear, with vertical black bars showing the years the page was archived (this example shows 8)
  5. Click one of the years—I usually recommend choosing one of the earlier years.
  6. After selecting a year, a 12-month calendar appears. Dates highlighted in blue indicate an archived version.
In this example, 2016 shows April 30 in blue.
  7. Hover over the blue date and you will see a timestamp (e.g., 18:05:20). Click that link.
  8. The archived page—in this case, the sermon notes on Isaiah 34—should now load.

Although this process may look complicated at first glance, it becomes very easy after doing it a few times. If the first year you choose does not display the document, simply try another year on the timeline. Using this method, I have been able to recover “missing” pages about 90% of the time over the past decade.

If you come across a bad link, would you kindly let me know? Please send the broken link AND the page where you found it using the contact form. Thank you for helping keep the site useful for everyone.

IS THERE AN APP?

No, but there is what I call a "Pseudo App" for quick access to preceptaustin resources. Click for instructions on how to make an icon for your iphone or ipad to allow quick access to the site and to the major resource subdivisions. Sorry, there is no "real" App as it is too costly.

HOW DO YOU SEARCH PRECEPTAUSTIN?

Since I can’t always remember the articles I’ve written over the past 20 years, my go-to method is to use the “Search Site with Google”. The most helpful tool is the Google-powered search box located at the top of every page.

HOW DO I USE THE GOOGLE SEARCH ON PRECEPTAUSTIN?

This is my typical approach throughout the day. When I need information about a term or topic, I simply type it into the Google search bar. If there’s a relevant article about the subject (for example, “rest”), it usually appears as the top search result, sometimes even accompanied by an AI-generated summary. However, searching for specific Bible verses isn’t usually effective. For that purpose, I recommend using the "Verse by Verse" tab described below.

HOW DO I FIND COMMENTS ON SPECIFIC BIBLE VERSES?

In the ribbon (menu bar) across the top of each page locate the tab VERSE BY VERSE.  If you are seeking commentary on a specific VERSE, the easiest way to find comments is as follows:

  1. Click the VERSE BY VERSE tab at top of each page.
  2. That takes you to Verse by Verse Commentary on the Entire New Testament
  3. Select book of the Bible and then verse.
  4. Note that links to commentary on Old Testament verses are on this page beneath the NT books,  however not every OT verse has commentaries.

In general, the commentary on each verse follows this pattern:

1. Full Verse – The entire verse is displayed.
2. Alternate Translations – Other Bible translations are often listed below.
3. Cross References – Sourced from the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Hovering over the references displays the full verse.
4. Chapter Resources Link – A link to resources for the entire chapter, such as: Hebrews 3 Resources
5. Related Passages – Sometimes included beneath the chapter resources.
6. Verse Title – A short summary or heading for the verse.
7. Verse Commentary – Comments on the verse, typically broken down phrase by phrase.
8. Greek Word Links – Many verses include links to original Greek words.
9. Greek Word Definitions – Often follows the commentary, providing more detailed explanations.
10. Additional Resources – A variety of materials may follow, such as illustrations, devotionals, and explanatory notes relevant to the verse.

HOW CAN I VIEW SCRIPTURE POPUPS IN ANOTHER TRANSLATION?

Select Preferred Translation - On the right side of each page you can select the Bible version you prefer to display the Scripture popups and that version will be applied to pop ups on every page on the website.

HOW CAN I READ THIS SITE IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE?

Select Language - On the right side of each page is the Google translation drop down which allows you to choose from 104 languages currently available. Be aware that Google translate is not geared to theological words, phrases and concepts, so the translation may not be entirely accurate. If you encounter any translations that are overtly erroneous please send me an email. Note that if you select a language on one page, you will see that language on every page of the website. One other feature to note is that if you hold your pointer over a translated section, you will see the original English translation in the popup.

HOW DO I FIND COLLECTIONS OF RESOURCES ON ALL 66 BOOKS?

On the ribbon or menu at the top of every page find COMMENTARIES. Click for a list of all 66 Books of the Bible and then simply click on the Book you would would like study. All 66 Books have 100's of resources including sermons, commentaries, devotionals, illustrations, etc. to help you study that Book. Obviously I have not read every resource but have attempted to list resources that are conservative and trustworthy. Alternatively you can access the resources on the 66 Books by using the drop down menu under the COLLECTIONS OF COMMENTARIES & SERMONS located on the right side of each page.

HOW CAN YOU HELP MAINTAIN PRECEPTAUSTIN AND KEEP IT FUNCTIONAL AND USEFUL?

If you come across a broken link or a typo, please help by reporting it! At the top of every page, you'll find a CONTACT US link on the far right of the menu bar. Use this to send an email with the following details:

  • For broken links:

    1. Copy the URL of the PreceptAustin page where you found the bad link.

    2. Copy the broken link itself.

  • For typos:

    1. Copy the URL of the page with the typo.

    2. Include the text containing the error (and a brief note if needed).

Since I maintain this website on my own, I rely on your reports to help keep everything working smoothly.

Some have kindly offered monetary donations, but thanks to God’s provision, financial support isn’t needed. The greatest gift you can offer is your prayers. If you feel led by the Spirit, please pray specifically for everyone who uses this site worldwide, that they may "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18). I am confident God hears this prayer (1 John 5:14-15), and I believe your prayers will store up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:20) where you will meet those men and women who you have been faithfully praying for! Thank you for co-laboring with me for the Lord’s work! May God’s grace, mercy, and peace be multiplied to you by His Spirit, through our Great High Priest Jesus Christ. Amen.

A Note About the Future:
I occasionally get questions about the future of PreceptAustin. I’m 79 this year (2025). My oldest son, Joel—an elder and teacher at his church—has agreed to continue the website after me.
